“I make things. I don’t obsess over tidying things up. Often the magic is in the mistakes. The splashes, smudges, tears (As in rips – I’ve yet to start painting with bodily fluids) are all evidence of human interaction.”
Tom Merton Jones is an artist, illustrator and Printmaker based in Yorkshire. He graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2012, with a First in Graphic Arts and Design.
Since graduating, Tom Has illustrated a children book, created a brand identity and designed menus and a shop front for a small independent tea rooms, and produced album artwork for bands, worked as a graphic designer for television, as well as completing a number of commissions for wall hung art.
For his personal projects, Tom finds inspiration in all manner of forms, whether that be a crane he has walked past every day for six months, a line in a song that particularly resonates, or a pair of shoes he likes the look of.
He does not obsess with tidying things up. Often, preferring to refer back to sketchbook pages, that capture an energy and spontaneity, which can be hard to reproduce once you have sat down to think about things. In an age where computers are used to create so much of what we see, with no evidence of human touch, often, the magic is in the mess.
