Richard attended Chesterfield Art School studying fine art, sculpture and architectural drawing where he met his wife Jean also an artist.
In 1959, when Chesterfield twinned with Darmstadt, he was commissioned to paint the famous spire to be presented to the German town.
He was involved in developing designs in the textile industry and connected with such designers as Mary Quant.
The call of his ancestral roots proved too strong to ignore! So he and his wife bought a farm high up in the Yorkshire dales and bred pedigree sheep and cattle. As President of The Highland Cattle Society he was able to travel and paint throughout Scotland, England and Northern Europe.
A deep connection with the natural world inspires his art, he has been lucky to share this with the people who have bought his paintings worldwide.
